Definition
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in every living plant. Extremely potent and incredibly fragrant, essential oils are derived from the flowers, seeds, bark, stems or roots of a plant. Essential oils have been compared to the life force or blood of plants, transporting nutrients to every cell, stimulating new growth, repairing structural damage and facilitating powerful immune responses.
These incredible qualities can be harnessed for enhancing human and even animal health as well. When essential oils are applied to skin, they carry the same healing force as they do to the plant. Because the oils are so highly concentrated, they are at least 50 times more therapeutically potent than the plant itself or herbs made from the plant.
Description
Essential oils are extracted from plant material, primarily by steam distillation. They have a clean feel and are quickly absorbed into the skin, leaving no residue. Essential oils are made of organic compounds such as esters, terpenes, phenols, ketones and aldehydes. Powerful properties of these compounds give essential oils their immediate action, empowering the body by supporting it’s own self-healing abilities to come back to homeostasis and balance.
Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue on your hand is full of essential oils.
History
In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits.
