By all appearances, Nifty Nappy serged fitted cloth diapers look very close to Goodmama serged fitted cloth diapers. They both have the same great fit on my little boy, but I am going to show you all the similarities and differences between the two so you can make a wise shopping decision. I am just laying out the facts – you chose what features are important to you.
Price:
Goodmama – $26.00
Nifty Nappy – $22.00
Materials:
Goodmama: Cotton Knit or Cotton Woven outer/cotton velour inner / cotton velour soaker
Nifty Nappy – Cotton Knit outer/hemp fleece sandwich layer/microfleece inner layer / hemp fleece & bamboo velour soaker

Main Differences:
The Nifty Nappy dipes are trimmer than the Goodmamas. As for absorbancy, they are almost equal. The Goodmama OBV diapers I have used overnight with an added hemp/fleece doubler. As for rise, they are almost equal. The Goodmama diaper is a tiny bit lower than the Nifty Nappy. Both are one size diapers with snaps going through all the layers. The Goodmama has a snap in 2 petal soaker whereas Nifty Nappy has a lay in soaker.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion or questions! If you have other questions or ways they compare please leave your questions in the comments and I will update my post after I get a few.
Edited to add:
I had the Goodmama diaper on David wrong the first time but now with Suzanne’s help I have it on perfectly – no bunching and a smooth fit. She was gracious and told me that she actually painstakingly desgined them not to bunch, so that was definitely user error.
Also, I appreciate all the comments supporting both of these hardworking women. I admire their attention to detail and quality diapers! Being a WAHM is more than I can do – I barely keep my blog updated with kids around so how they do it all is beyond me!
THanks for sharing.. I have a goodmama, but have not tried the nifty nappy. I love my goodmama, but have heard really good things about the nifty nappy diapers.
I have a stash of Goodmama Diapers and LOVE Them!! Been a fan of Suzanne’s since 2007 🙂
Thanks, I have wondered the differences myself, I constantly have people ask me how they compare, and I have yet to have even seen one. This was a very good unbiased description of both diapers. 🙂
I have had goodmamas and now have many nifty nappies. I found that the nifty nappies are actually much more absorbent (for us) so I don’t use GMs anymore. Thanks for posting this!
How interesting. I found my Goodmamas to be more absorbent, but I am glad that you enjoyed the post 🙂
Nifty Nappy is just much better! I also like them better because they are WAHM made. We need to support more of the WAHMs out there and their products. I’m finding that the quality and construction are much better than the other “commercial diapers” out there.
Actually Chari Suzanne is one of the hardest working WAHMS I know. Sure she hires other mamas to help sew her diapers but thankfully they are USA women and Suzanne is always working on her diapers. Her success is from her hard work
Just wanted to point out that you have the goodmama snapped wrong. There is no reason for there to be one exposed snap. There would be none or 2 or 4, but never one. The bunching also only happens if it’s been snapped wrong. I’ve had a babe in GMs for over 2 years and that doesn’t happen on any of our diapers.
One of the major differences in the diapers is the hemp. Goodmama stopped using hemp some time ago because hemp can get crunchy and stinky over time. Hemp is cheaper though, which is why she can sell it cheaper. Goodmama is the only diaper maker who uses bamboo fabric NOT imported from China. The fabric is made in the US, by US workers, not shipped in from overseas and then shipped out to multiple people and places, at high environmental costs.
Once you factor in free shipping for an order over $100 at goodmama vs. $8 in shipping for 4 Nifty Nappy, you’re really only saving $8. I support Suzanne, a WAHM (yes, the owner of goodmama is a WAHM, even if she no longer sews the diapers herself) because she is providing jobs to others in a bad economy.
I must stand up for myself in this instance… I did not “rip off” anyone else’s design. I have never used a GM. I have only ever heard good things about them, but why should I buy diapers when I can make them. I have only ever used my homemade diaper. I would never take another’s design and run with it.
The hemp thing too- I have the hemp as an inner layer and if you know how to take care of it it feels and smells fine. I have hemp diaper I have used for years that are still as soft as the first day! Also, then hemp never has to touch the baby.
Vilate, you have my apologies for mistaking your diapers for having the same snap placement as goodmamas. The small pictures on my tiny phone made it appear that they were the same, but upon taking a closer look, I see that they are different, as is your snapping instruction for making it a smaller size. Sadly, there are a number of WAHMs out there who *have* copied Suzanne’s design and sold it as their own. I am glad to see that you are not one of them.
well, thank you and your apology is accepted! 🙂 It has been kinda fun to see all the mamas that like my diapers and stand up for them and me though.
CDing mama sounds more like a company owner than a dedicated customer. Are all customers this educated to know everything from manufacturing to distribution?
I think by attitude alone Nifty Nappy is the diaper of choice. Business is business and all but there’s tact and there’s venom.
Some of us educate ourselves about the companies we are loyal too. I’ve been in the CDing world long enough to see who is making diapers and goodmama used that snap configuration/placement long before any of the others adopted it. The blogging mama was pointing out differences between the two, so I was simply adding my own observations on how they are different.
Really? If adding your own observations is dissing a WAHM then you’re a brilliant observer! Do you even own Nifty Nappy Diapers? Obviously you’ve never bought from Vilate….cause you’d know she offers free shipping as well. And you don’t have to spend $100.00 to get it!
I have had better experience with Vilate’s customer service than Goodmama’s. I’ve emailed Goodmamas on more than one occasion, with no response, asking questions. I also emailed Vilate when I had questions, she responded quickly and was always sweet about it. Good Mama on the other hand never did, when I finally did get a response, it was a “computer generated” type of email that was basic and didn’t even answer my questions!
If you’re looking for customer service you can’t get any better or friendlier than Vilate. Heck I e-mailed her with a question TOTALLY unrelated to my order and she helped me out very graciously!
.
This is Annie editing your comment. I really don’t think you were calling Suzanne’s employee this personally. I had to edit it because flunky is a personal reference and I want to keep this discussion about the diapers 🙂
I did offer free shipping on my sets but that was before I went retail, now I do have shipping, it is only USPS priority. but not per diaper.
I do love Goodmamas, but I have heard horror stories about their customer service. I have a handful of them, but they have all been purchased on DiaperSwappers or from someone else who is selling them privately. I won’t give a penny of my money to a company who treats their customers so poorly. I’ve heard this from about 5 or 6 different people, so sadly it’s not an isolated situation.
I have had nothing but positive experiences but I have heard of a few incidents as well. But I haven’t heard any complaints lately, the last poor reports I heard where when she was growing and I attributed it to growing pains any company goes through. So sorry you and others have had poor experiences though 🙁
Hi Katie,
I would invite you to try goodmama and decide for yourself how you feel about my customer service. It is true that the company grew very quickly, and was hard to do everything perfectly all the time, but if you give me a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by your experience. I think it’s important to find things out first hand. <3
Thank you for your comment! I love and welcome all feedback. Thank you for the review Annie!
Hi Suzanne, I do have 4 of your diapers but as I said they have all been purchased second hand. I am very satisfied with them, but because I know of a number of people from a forum I post on who have had bad customer service experiences (one woman who has given you at least $1000 of business, I can’t in good conscience purchase from you. I do love the diapers very much. We use them as our overnight diapers.
I think I’m going to have to try one of the Nifty Nappies, they look nice (and I LOVE hemp for diaper fabric!).
Why was Christie’s comment edited? I get that we’re here to talk about the diapers, but when there’s a severe customer service problem, that’s something that shouldn’t be ignored either.
I announced on twitter why and in the bottom of the blog post. I want to keep comments about what I wrote about – the differences in the diapers. If you would like, please blog about it on your own blog. I want to keep my post about the topic at hand. I left your original comment up though since I realize that you have a right to let people know. I hope you understand.
I have both brands… In my experience, our Nifty Nappys are more absorbant & trimmer, but we like both diapers. I think that it’s pretty assuming of someone to say that one ripped off the other- the snaps are different, the soaker is different, etc… They are both good diaper companies- it just comes down to what’s most important for you & what works best with you, your child & your budget.
Thank you for sharing this comparison. This is a great idea. There are so many great diapers out there and terrific WAHMs creating them. I have not had the opportunity to try Good Mamas yet, but have heard great buzz about them. We are very happy with the fit and absorbency of the Nifty Nappy’s and can’t wait for our fluff mail to deliver some more. We were lucky enough to purchase them half off due to a great referral special Nifty Nappy had. My biggest issue with either one of these brands (as well as a few others) is really the cost. I was talking through starting cloth diapering with a friend recently and it is difficult to recommend diapers that cost so much and still need a cover.
Ahhh my two favorite brands of fitteds!!!
I love both of these diapers for totally different reasons. I love that the GM soaker snaps in and that the inside of the body of the diaper has cotton/bamboo velour as well as the insert. I love how trim and absorbent Nifty Nappy diapers are (hemp is actually my fave material for absorbency). Both have great prints selections and snaps, which I cannot live without!
Kudos to BOTH brands, we sure love you guys here!
Thank you for such a great comment! I totally agree!! I agree that I like how the GM soaker snaps in and the trimness of the NN. All personal preference!
I want to add regarding customer service that I have ordered twice from Goodmama without any problems. Any delays in shipping were around the Holidays when they posted that items would not ship for a few weeks, so you had to order knowing they would be delayed.
I have had more experience with Nifty Nappy customer service, and Vilate pretty much rocks my socks. You just can’t beat a money-back guarantee if you are not totally in love with your diapers. Plus, because she is a smaller company, she will take the time to tweet or email back and forth with you and troubleshoot any problems. I adore Vilate and cannot say enough good about her customer service or product.
Ok, well I don’t know anything about cloth diapers. I am LOL right now though. I was about to head over on twitter and ask what that was that you drew on baby’s stomach and then I realized it was your blog name embedded.
Can I just say I love the name Nifty Nappy?
Both are super cute too!
I did think about cloth diapers when I was pregnant with my 2nd kiddo. I don’t know who I was kidding though….When 1st kiddo was potty training and had a poopy accident? Well, those panties went into the trash.
Wal-Mart sure got a lot of my money when we were potty training! New panties every week.
I did breastfeed though. That makes me a good mom, right?
BUT WAIT…I also bottle fed (first kiddo).
Whew, I don’t need any debates going on.
I support all moms!
Cute cloth diapers though! I am sure y’all care about how much poop it will hold though.
I will stop now : )
I have yet to try Nifty Nappy although I do have one – I JUST washed it. Hee hee… and I have four or five GMs. It’s great to see an unbiased comparison. I also agree with Mindy – it IS difficult to convince someone who may be new to CDing or even those that do CD for a while to purchase diapers that cost more than $15 dollars for something that your kid poos or pees in AND still need something to cover it up for leak prevention. Fitteds are the most expensive option to diaper (IMO) but they do work well and I do love ’em! They have so many more cute options/prints than pockets! :))
Thank you for this comment! I tried very hard to give an unbiased comparison since I hadn’t seen one anywhere yet. I have 8 GMs and love every single one. I let my LO go coverless with them on and never had a leak. GMs (in spite of the price) were my first CD love LOL
I have never tried a goodmama- and would happily do it. I was able to get my nifty nappys for really good prices as Vilate is always having sales. If it wasn’t for my winning a giveaway that she generously did, I wouldn’t have been able to try the diaper. I have since gotten to know Vilate personally as she is an hour drive from me. She is an honest woman with integrity and that comment above about her ripping off someone’s diaper style is COMPLETELY INNAPROPRIATE. I have seen Vilate’s first diapers, this is something she worked on. Furthermore, many people make diapers with the same style as good mama. So maybe they all ripped them off??? Yeah for Vilate and Suzanne for doing something so great! I totally need to try a goodmama now 🙂 I should also add that Vilate uses some of the money she makes to support stay at home mom’s she is always doing that. And isn’t that what it is all about, supporting wahms?
Agreed. It’s a diaper. How many different designs are possible?
I just wanted to say you are so lucky to live so close to Vilate! She is a sweetheart to chat with, I can imagine what a good friend she is in real life 🙂
I’m amazed by some of the rude comments on here towards either woman/company.
I myself don’t own any of the goodmama fitteds, I only have a few of the Ones. I also own some nifty nappy fitteds that i got discounted before Vilate went wholesale.
I’ve found the goodmama’s have a higher rise which is nice on my long torsoed little ones, but the nifty nappys stay softer and have a better overall fit.
I myself prefer hemp diapers since my kids are such heavy wetters and have found the bamboo to not be as absorbent, plus I have never had issues with my hemp not staying soft.
Though I did purchase the goodmamas through their site I have not dealt with their customer service at all, but have dealt with Vilate and she has been absolutely wonderful and very helpful and willing to help solve any problems you may have.
Both diapers are very nice quality and it mostly comes down to what your child needs since different diapers work differently for different children. Great unbiased post!
Thank you very much for adding your experience! It is good to hear some positive things about hemp, and I know it (along with many things in cloth diapering) is a personal preference. Yes, hemp is a very thirsty fabric!
I haven’t tried either..but have been itching to try a Nifty Nappy and entering all the giveaways I can find ! I had never heard of them before coming to twitter/blogs
Wonderful unbiased and informative review! It is a shame, however that personal attacks are taking center stage. Perhaps someone should also alert FORD that TOYOTA has gone and copied their “car”…let’s support each other ladies. It is ok to have different oppinions, likes and dislikes, etc. However let’s be a little more respectful and dignified when sharing them;)
Thank you Danielle!
I really want to remind everyone that both Suzanne and Vilate work very hard on their diapers. Both have invested a ton of love into the fluff that we enjoy. I hate to see spiteful comments towards either of them. Yes, there have been issues with Goodmama customer service. That has been said. I’d like to focus more comments on my original post now – just the basic differences between the diapers 🙂
Let me just say A. The snap configuration is adifferent* between the two diapers, so much so that I SOLD MY GOODMAMAs because I wanted more esbaby and nifty nappy. Any accusations of copying design are just down right uninformed.
I actually have both of these diapers too. I have two goodmama fitteds that I got used and two nifty nappy fitteds (with more on the way). I actually prefer my nifty nappies as I find them to be both more absorbent and trim than the goodmamas. My son will be soaking wet in the front of the goodmama fitteds and the back will be bone dry, while the nifty nappy distributes the wetness throughout the diaper better.
And I personally love hemp and I use a hemp and microfiber or bamboo combo in almost all my pocket diapers!
I feel the need to post and defend my employee Becky who has been with me for so long. She came in and rolled up her sleeves and cheerfully worked around my children and my house that had been overrun by diapers. She is super hardworking and honest and resourceful, and always follows instructions to the letter. It hurts my heart to see someone call her a “corporate flunky.” I am a wahm, I work from home 99% of the time with children climbing on me, I have to wipe crumbs from the table to sit down and work, I take photos of diapers in my living room, and am trying to do my very best by all of my wonderful customers. Becky answers all customer service emails promptly and thoroughly, and we have taken a great deal of care in making sure that our responses to emails are as thorough and helpful as possible. She does so much, with such care, I just hate to see her spoken about this way. Yes, goodmama is incorporated, but that is just a legal destination that my father insisted we do based on his experience with starting businesses, but we are about as far from “corporate” as you can get. In addition, I am always available on twitter, facebook and email if you want to talk to me. Sometimes I can’t answer immediately, but that’s because I’m a single mother with four children and sometimes I’m driving, or making dinner, or folding laundry, or just being with my kids. I know all of you are mothers as well and know how it is! Yes I have some very supportive supporters, but just because emotions run high with customers does not mean that my business is not focused on doing our very best. Thanks for the review Annie, and the great discussion. I would hope that all parties participating in this discussion will keep it civil. <3
I totally agree with Suzanne… let’s not get personal ladies. I give kudos to Suzanne for being able to do this all as a single mom, I don’t know if I would be able to do it alone. I understand the “business” end of it. I am working toward that end also. It is better all around if your “business” is separate from your personal finances.
I love the comment about wiping the crumbs off the table! I do that also. The kitchen table is where I do most of my work too. I admire Suzanne for the life she leads and the business she has. Let’s move beyond this k? Let’s just say that we both make good diapers and they both have their differing qualities that are personal preferences. I am proud to have my diapers comparable to the Goodmama diapers. I also hope to some day meet Suzanne as she is a fellow Utahn! 🙂
So, let’s keep it positive k ladies?
You live in Utah? Where? (lol)
I live in Bluebell, it is out by Roosevelt and Duchesne. In Duchesne county. We are about an hr from Vernal. Maybe we should get together and open a diaper shop huh? LOL! Utahns don’t buy cloth diapers though…well not enough anyway!
Right but we’re going to change that! It’s the baby capital of the US!
I was reading this again today to see if there was any further discussion from moms who’ve been able to compare the two. I just wanted to comment about how cool it is that Suzanne and Vilate are both here joining the discussion! I think reviews are so important because they really helped me become more informed about cloth when starting out and I still look to them when making purchases. The truth is, my little guys diapering needs have changed over time and I don’t grab the same diaper daily! As I have more babies, I will certainly purchase more diapers and I hope to put a goodmama in the mix with my Nifty Nappys! (How fun that you’re both from Utah, by the way! I tried to get people to just recycle 10 years ago at BYU. Good luck with the dipes! lol.)
I really need help with these!! 🙂 I have just purchased some of these nappys and are a little unsure if I am doing this right. HELP!
I LOVE my Nifty Nappys! I’ve held on to a couple Goodmama’s but right now they just don’t fit well at all. But I’m sure once my little chunker with the super long waist gets moving around and slims down, they’ll fit a little better (here’s hoping!)
But I find my NNs to be much more absorbent than my GMs, but I got my GMs used on DS and my NNs new, so that may be the difference?
Plus the NNs are stretchier softer (but once again, could be a not-new-GM thing…??)
