Dinosaur Train is an educational animated television show that airs on PBS on weekday mornings. It is produced by Jim Henson’s company and uses dynamic CGI animation.
Lizzie was first attracted to this show last year when she saw the train. She has always been attracted to trains, her first love is Thomas. But after watching it for awhile she also began to follow the adventures of the Pteranodon family and the bright colors kept her attention.
As a parent I always turn on PBS kids in the mornings before I go to any other channel. Lizzie enjoys watching Word World, Sesame Street and Clifford – all in addition to Dinosaur Train. I love this show. It does not dumb down the names of any of the dinosaurs and I really appreciate that they introduce a new species in each episode.
The study of paleontology does bring controvery between those that believe in a literal 7 day creation or the million years of evolution. No matter what you believe you can rest assured that this DVD – while it mentions the age of the earth a few times – does not try and teach kids a certain way. As a parent you can discuss with your child what you believe about the age of the earth and help them learn the species of the dinosaurs with the aid of movie!
Another rave for this movie: Dr. Scott the Paleontologist segments. He calls himself a paleontologist and teaches children additional facts about the dinosaurs they are watching in the cartoon. The vocabulary in this show alone make me happy to let Lizzie watch. There is nothing cuter than hearing her little voice say ‘Pteranodon.”
This particular DVD takes the Pteranodon family into the ocean where they meet all sorts of underwater dwelling species, including sharks. This brings the past into the present and makes it so educational and easier to relate to.
