Wednesday night, Riley and Pottawatomie Counties experienced terrientail rainshowers and severe storms that pushed Wildcat Creek, Big Blue and Kansas Rivers to their banks. According to 1350 KMAN, Riley County Police Captain Kurt Moldrup said The Kansas River was expected to crest at 19 feet by noon Thursday.
The following neighborhoods in Manhattan were evacuated due to flooding:
- Red Bud Estates
- Woodduck Way
- Fairman
- Highland Ridge
- Connecticut
- Garden Way
Jerry Hutchinson, owner of KHCA Angely 95 FM, said the flood waters were chest high by the Garden Way apartments on the west side of Manhattan.
The American Red Cross set up cots and provided food at the Saint Thomas More Church on Kimball Avenue for displaced persons affected by the high waters. And while pets were not allowed in the church, Wildcat Pet Resort accepted pets for free for the first couple of nights.
Here are some photos of the Big Blue River I was able to snap earlier today:
Normally, the edge of the river is in front of that tree and that tree is not submerged in the water at all.
And this is a photo of the creek in Saint George that feeds into the Big Blue River. It was moving very fast and was very full!
Our house is situated on a hill, so we did not experience any flooding, thankfully. I remember being displaced from the Flood of ’93 so my heart goes out to everyone that was affected by last night’s rain. I heard on the radio that this was the worst Manhattan has been flooded since 1993, and I believe them.

How high is that river normally? Flash floods are definitely scary. Are you in an area away from the flooding or is your home in the path?

LOL! I left out some important info didn’t I? I just updated the post to answer your questions, thanks for asking.
Nope, we were not personally affected. And normally the waters are much, much lower beneath the bridges. The tree can normally be seen entirely and here it is half submerged in water.

thank you for the photos and very good info.

The north part of the state gets this & the southwest corner can’t buy a drop of water! I wish it could even out!
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
isn’t that the truth?? Oh how I wish our big blue river could feed and water south west ks. My thoughts have been with them during this drought. My children’s pastor has family that farm down there and they had to dig 2 feet to get any moisture 🙁

Oh my goodness! So sad! I will have to call my friend in Ft. Riley tomorrow to see how they are doing.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
Fort Riley was not affected at all, just a few areas in Manhattan and Clay Center. But call your friend! She will really love that you thought of her. 🙂
Sarah says
Oh good. I hope it stays away from her. Thanks for giving info. 😀

That is the highest I’ve seen the Kansas River and Blackjack Creek since we moved here 8 years ago. Glad you took pictures!
We used to live in the Gardenway apts. that were evacuated.

I hope your family is safe and you weren’t in jeopardy from all of that rain. I really like the shot you took of the bridge too.

I hope it returns to normal fast! Stay safe Annie
