If nurse-ins aren’t generating enough attention, how about adding a giant boob on top of a truck? Jill Miller thought up this idea and is currently raising money to build this truck.
Her idea is to provide a comfortable place for mother’s to breastfeed their babies in if they happen to be told to leave an establishment because of nursing. Basically, if a mom is asked to leave, she just tweets or facebooks the milk truck, then a few mothers come to her location with the truck and allow her to eat in comfort in the truck while it is parked in front of the offending eatery.
I totally get what they are trying to do – raise awareness for breastfeeding, possibly shame the business for acting so rudely and support mothers that are doing what is best for their babies. But in my opinion nurse-ins are enough of a spectacle without bringing the milk truck to the scene.
If a mother is asked to cover up or leave the establishment, I agree that the owner is wrong and the mother should not be ashamed. But bringing the milk truck in seems to me like it is making a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be. This is not going to help normalize breastfeeding, but it will seem crazy, outlandish and bring more attention to the breastfeeding.
To normalize nursing in public, I think we simply need to be discreet and refuse to leave. If people ask us to leave, inform them we have every legal right to be there. Support your fellow breastfeeding mothers by nursing in public without shame. Maybe even boycott the places that are offended by a mother feeding her baby.
We have a right to feed our babies wherever we are. So let’s do it! I don’t see the need for the milk truck though.
What do you think? I’d love to hear other opinions! Do you agree with the milk truck? Would you use it?
