I am not going to post pictures, I will just admit right away that I adore all things babywearing, I just stink at tying Lucy in a back carry with my gauze wrap.
I know, woven wraps have the highest learning curve. I adore my Sleepy Wrap and still carry her in a front carry with it. I bought a lovely blue gauze wrap from Baby Ette and have been dying to get the hang of it. It doesn’t help matters any that Lucy is super wiggly, so learning with her happens over the bed.
But I am determined to get this.
So far Lucy loves her Rockin Baby ring sling, Sleepy Wrap and Ergo. She fights me every time I try to put her in my Mei Tai. I think it is because it is the least soft of all my carriers. That is the only thing I can think of. Either that or I am tying it too tight.
I was tweeting about babywearing last night with a really friendly mama that has a passion for babywearing – and owns a shop that sells carriers too! She owns a Canadian baby carrier shop called Natural Urban Mamas. You can find all sorts of carriers there – Baby Ette wraps and ring slings and Guru mama Mei Tais and many more.
She shared a video with me made by a WAHM named Erin, to help me learn how to tie my wrap. All the wraps, slings and mei tais she sells are hand sewn by Erin and 2 other moms that live near her sew and create wraps, slings and mei tais. I love mompreneurs!
She sent me a video of how to wrap Lucy in the gauze wrap in a back carry. This is what I will be watching and practicing all day. Wish me luck!
Hey Girl – It took me hours of practicing with Jamie on my back in front of a mirror to get it. He was older though (18 mos-ish). With Daniel the thing that helped me the most was putting the wrap around his back before I put him on my back. You’ll get it eventually.
Hi Jenny! Yup, practice is what it will take. I found out that when I did it the other dayI didn’t get it tight enough and she slid down my back LOL. I also noticed a technique in this video where she slowly gathered the fabric in her hands, I haven’t done that yet, I just grab and tie. I think going too fast has left it uncomfy for Lucy.
I will be practicing, cause I have this lovely wrap that I am dying to use LOL
I wish that I had known about stuff like this when I had my daughter. She was on my hip until she was 2 years old. LOL My back still hurts!
Back then we didn’t know about “babywearing” – you just held your baby all of the time because they’d cry if you put them down! ha ha
I know what you mean! I didn’t know about babywearing when Lizzie was a baby and she was the clingiest little thing! I got a Moby wrap when she was like 7 months old but it is a stretch wrap and she was FAT so it didn’t work. But then when David was born I got more carriers and was in heaven!
Wow, that looks extremely hard and very dangerous as the baby could easily fall if she let go of the wrap. Ahh.. I also sell baby slings which are much easier and more versatile. It takes 2 seconds to get the baby in and they are super secure. You can wear them on the front, hip, back, kangaroo carry, breastfeeding carry, etc.
I have one for my 15 month old baby and I have used it since he was a newborn and absolutely love them. You can check it out here. There are also videos on how easy it is to get the baby in and secured. They are the ring slings and the videos are on each item page.

Thank you so much for stopping by Samantha. I browsed your site and fell in love with the nursing dresses – so stylish! And you sell some beautiful slings too.
The mom in the video has been tying wraps on her babies for many years, so I bet she knows exactly how to keep it snug and secure while she ties. But yes, you bring up a very valid point – anyone that is learning this wrap for the first time must practice over a mattress first. That is what I have been doing 🙂
Ring slings and the other slings you sell are wonderful and so easy anyone can use them without having to learn how. I love ring slings! Only thing with ring slings is they are not good for long periods of time – at least not for me – as they end up hurting my shoulder since all the weight isn’t evenly distributed.
Thanks for stopping by my site. Glad you liked my things.
Yes I agree that you would have to do it over a mattress if you are just learning. Babywearing with any sling or wrap is amazing. It is much better than moving around with a stroller.
One thing about the ring sling. I have been using a ring sling for my son for many months now and I have never had a problem. The ones I sell are made of strong silk or linen so they are capable of lasting for multiple kids. It takes a few times to get it positioned right on your shoulder but after you do it distributes the weight evenly and doesn’t cause back pain. We travelled to Africa last year with the baby and I carried him in the sling for many hours at the airport as well as walking around on the streets of Uganda. I never had a problem and it was SO convenient. I had many people stare at me because that is how African women carry their kids. I think they were surprised to see a white woman carrying her baby the same way. 🙂
It just wasn’t for me either. I was all about the pre-shaped backpack.
I looked at the ring sling site (I’m really looking for one for when this baby is born), and I just don’t ‘get’ their sizing. At all. Do you know of any other reputable places? I’m about 5’2, with a 36 DD that will get bigger while nursing, and HUGE shoulders for such a short person, more like a man’s shoulders. Any thoughts you have would be great.
The ring sling I have is from RockinBabySling.com and I love them. Their slings are one size. They sell an XS size ring sling but that is for teeny women, of which I am not LOL The size chart on Rockin baby is mostly for their pouches. Pouches you get in different sizes because they are not adjustable. Ring Slings have that tail that goes through the rings – so depending on how tall or short you are, you will have less or more tail hanging down.
Me? I am 5’4 and 150 lbs. The Rockin Baby ring sling tail reaches about my knees. My husband wears it and it goes about to his hips. Still works perfectly fine for both of us 🙂
Hey Sweet Mama~
ALL I used to carry my children in was this type of wrap. We tramped all over Germany in it and nursed everywhere while wearing it as well…climbing through castles, picking blackberries and strawberries, Friday markets. I loved it. I often had one tied to me, one in the stroller and one riding on the little stroller step you can attach to the back of it. I used to feel naked without a baby strapped to me. Sweet memories…anyone want to give me a baby?! My husband actually preferred to carry our little ones on his back like this over using our Kelty backpack, which he also really enjoyed. Once you become comfortable with it, I think you will love it too. Most definitely practice over something soft:) but you’ll get it! Happy baby wearing!
Thank you Jhona! Part of me wonders if my wrap is just too thin? it is super light gauze. So when I try and flip it over chunky Lucy it gets caught on her middle and I reach for it while balancing her…..oh it is frustrating. I am going to have Josh help me. You better believe when I get her on my back perfectly I am taking some pictures and posting here!
I can totally see you as a babywearing mama! Oh I bet you loved it!
I have been coveting woven wraps since I had my daughter. I have chunky chunky babies, and I have heard they are a LOT more supportive than knit wraps– let me know how it goes and if the learning curve is worth it!
I found one on sale for $40 and snatched it! Only thing is, it is a gauze. Yes, it is much more supportive, but it is so light that I am having troubles flipping it over my back from one shoulder to the other. I will let you know how it goes. Woven wraps are normally like near $100 each….so worth it? Not sure…..at least not if you are used to the Ergo or ring sling like I am.
I have a bad back AND chubby babies so I always grab for my Ergo. Curious to try some other structured carriers, but they’re so expensive. Have you seen the new PPB Ergo prints? Drooling over those!
OMG those PPB prints slay me! I had an Ergo giveaway and was floored when my winner chose a solid colored carrier. I would love one of those prints!
I, too, have a difficult time with back carries! I find the first hardest part is getting it tucked securely under my baby, and the second hardest part is getting the passes to go over my baby correctly! I’m trying to tell myself it’s because I need a shorter wrap, so I can just do a ruck carry, but maybe that’s just an excuse to buy a new wrap! I probably just need to practice more!
Hey Annie,
Good for you being determined to succeed! Anything worth doing is worth taking the time to learn and do well.
Every time I take the time to wrap Eric on my back rather than just pop him in the ring sling (which I LOVE too) I’m thankful that I did.
I’s so comfy, and secure, he sleeps longer, and I can get so much more done while he’s safely on my back, than having to reach around him all the time when he’s on my front…
Way to go, Mama!
For you ladies that want to try pax baby rents out all their carriers. I am trying to get the back carry down with my one year old and it’s a pain. I know it will be worth it once I get it.
I love Paxbaby! It is such a wonderful site – and you carry all of the best carriers. I didn’t know you could rent out carriers from them. I’m going to have to suggest this to more mamas now. Thanks!
I was not able to see the video 🙁 I have used my woven wrap a few time and oI love it, but it does take a lot of practice! Can you please share the link of the video with me. Thank you
