The new book by Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruze, “Smart Money Smart Kids” is set to release April 22, 2014. I was given an advanced reader’s copy and I am so excited to share my thoughts with you. (Note that this post is sponsored but every opinion is totally my own. I’ve loved Dave Ramsey for years and joined his team to promote this book before it was released because I just couldn’t wait!)
What I love about this book is it is not just another Dave Ramsey book. Have you ever wondered what it was like growing up with Dave as a dad? I know I have. Rachel’s perspective is priceless and her insights in this book had me grabbing my pen and highlighter. This book is a very quick read. Dave and Rachel say it like it is, they don’t pretty it up or try to soften the blow. Below are some of my favorite points from the book. Go buy your own (and a few to give away to friends). It is an investment in your kids’ future!
“We declared not only that we would never be in that [broke] situation again, but also that we would permanently sear proper money principals into our children’s being so they would never be in the same situation.” – Dave Ramsey, Smart Money Smart Kids
That quote is found in the introduction of the book. Then immediately it opens with Rachel sharing her story. Her mom and dad went broke when she was just a toddler. She doesn’t remember ever going through something like that. And thanks to the principals she learned from her father, Rachel has never been broke or experienced a lack of knowledge about how to handle money. This really didn’t shock me. But what did impact me is the fact that Rachel is living proof that her dad’s teachings were effective. Sure, she might have ended up benefiting from his eventual success, but that alone didn’t gauruntee her protection from bad choices. She says in the first chapter, “Being Dave Ramsey’s daughter didn’t guarantee that I’d never struggle with money; knowing and applying Dave Ramsey’s principals did.” In fact, as I read chapter one, I became enraptured with Rachel’s story, how proper money techniques was every day life and how it brought them from ruin to riches. It is inspiring.
Chapter two kept me reading more as she described how work was a habit all the children learned, no question. Things were never just handed to the Ramsey kids, they had to earn them. This chapter switches very frequently between Dave and Rachel telling the story. First we hear about how they never had an allowance – they worked on commission, earning money. Then Dave shares why he hates the word allowance – quoting scripture too. This chapter is fabulous because it outlines exactly what jobs each age group of children can do and how to help them earn money instead of merely giving it to them. This chapter alone is worth the entire price of the book!
The following chapters are written in the same way – back and forth between Dave and Rachel and with easy-to-implement tactics for each age group. Here is what you will find inside:
Chapter 3 Spend: When it’s gone it’s gone
Chapter 4 Save: Wait for it
Chapter 5 Give: It’s not yours anyway (I LOVE THIS CHAPTER!!!)
Chapter 6 Budgeting: Tell It What to Do (So many of my friends were not taught how to budget before leaving for college. This is a must-read)
Chapter 7 Debt: It IS a Four Letter Word
Chapter 8 College: Don’t graduate from I.O.U.
Chapter 9 Contentment: The War for Your Child’s Heart
Chapter 10 Family: Put the FUN in Dysfunctional
Chapter 11 Generational Handoff – blessing or curses
Chapter 12 I was that dad…
“The heart of your child is under siege by endless marketing, pervasive peer pressure, and a choking shallowness from our contemporary culture. You can’t take this attack laying down. You have to rise up and fight continuously and fiercely to protect your child from these enemies.” – Dave Ramsey Smart Money Smart Kids p. 180
That quote sums up the entire heart and soul of this book. It will inspire to you continue to work hard at budgeting, saving and giving while providing practical steps for teaching your children these same attributes. Don’t miss this book, buy it for every baby shower you attend. Teaching proper money management practices is as important as teaching manners and self-care.
