How do you cure a really bad hangover naturally? Essential oils can help with so many bad effects!
Keep reading this guide and discover the best combination of essential oils for your worst hangovers.
Head pounding?
Stomach turning?
World swirling?
Anytime you’ve indulged in a little too much fun, these simple essential oil combos will help you face the world the next morning, with your best *balanced* foot forward.
Before we go much further – let me say this: I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on TV. I’m not selling anything. I’m just sharing a few things I’ve discovered that worked for me. Always talk to your doctor first before treating anything. Even something as small as a hangover.
And yes…hangovers SUCK.
Whether you’re wrangling kiddos, prepping for an important interview, charging through a marathon day, meeting with critical clients or warming up for the race you’ve been training for all summer – we all have reasons we can’t afford not to feel our best the morning after a much-needed night out.
So here’s to having your fun and being a “grown up” too.
The Best Essential Oils For Hangovers
It’s times like these when essential oils feel like the BEST friend I just can’t do without.
My go-to oils for this kind of thing are wild orange, peppermint, lemon and lavender. This is the essential oil symphony that gets me through whatever I’m facing the next day.
Let’s be honest, even simple tasks can feel like insurmountable feats when you’ve had too much to drink.
Lemon Oil
I use lemon first and foremost because it is a power house oil. It’s all “wake up!” and “today is the day” and especially “poof! cobwebs be GONE!”
One of my favorite ways to use lemon oil is either on my wrist for a really bright pick-me-up, or a few drops in my water. I feel so refreshed, it’s a very bright scent.
Wild Orange
Wild orange is amazing for gently energizing, awakening and lifting your mood. Just the scent alone makes me feel so much more alert.
So when I feel like I just can’t move very well the next day, a few drops of Wild Orange in my diffuser resets my brain. The aromatherapy of Wild Orange is so powerful.
Lavender
Lavender does the opposite as a very calming oil. It relaxes my anxiety and calms my pounding thoughts.
Sometimes hangovers cause tense muscles or a lot of extra stress. I like to put a few drops on the back of my neck. It helps me relax. I pair this with some deep breathing and I feel like I can face the day.
Peppermint
Perhaps most importantly, peppermint can instantly reduce nausea, help increase your focus and enable clarity of thought. You can even try massaging a tiny bit of peppermint and lavender across your forehead and into your temples – just try, you will notice a difference.
Hangover Recovery Essential Oil Blend
Lemon, wild orange and peppermint is (in my humble opinion) the hangover trifecta – so versatile you can drink it in your water, inhale and diffuse it in the air or apply it topically… or for the most profound recuperation, do all three!
Even if it means getting up a little earlier (easier said than done, I know), I’ve found it is more than worth it to get in these essential oil combos. Taking the time to apply my oils pays off huge dividends in my ability to cope with the day.
Refreshing Hangover Relief Cocktail
- 10-12 oz cool water
- 3 drops Wild Orange
- 3 drops Lemon
- 3 drops Peppermint
I like to drop the essential oils in the bottom of my glass first, then adding the water to help the oils distribute evenly. Remember to always use glass or stainless steel when mixing beverages with essential oils. Sip this blend, drinking it all within 30 to 45 minutes, followed by additional fresh, cool water to help cleanse, soothe and detoxify.
Detox, Restore & Revive Massage Oil
- 2 drops Wild Orange
- 2 drops Lemon
- 2 drops Peppermint
- 2 drops Lavender
- 2 drops carrier oil, such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil
Massage this wonderfully refreshing, relieving and detoxifying blend into your skin. Afterwards, cup your hands around your mouth and breathe in deeply to help relax and calm your mind and body.
Don’t forget to massage a dab of peppermint and lavender across your forehead and gently at your temples to feel like everything that happened the night before is a distant, fragrant, memory.
Diffuse Your Hangover Away
- 3 drops Wild Orange
- 3 drops Lemon
- 3 drops Peppermint
- 75-100mL filtered water
Add 3 drops each wild orange, lemon and peppermint in a diffuser nearby where you’ll be working to help revive, refresh and sharpen your mind for the important tasks at hand.
If you find any of the above helpful and intriguing, make sure to check back in next week when I’ll spill the beans on something absolutely GLORIOUS, a bath soak designed specifically for a blissful relaxation (and I won’t judge you if you have a glass or two of wine in the tub!).

Just so y’all know it can be really dangerous to ingest essential oils. Make sure to do your research!(:

How so? I keep hearing that’s it’s ok if they are “therapeutic ” oil. I’m interested to know why it might be a bad idea. Obvious for some but for things like lavender, peppermint, lemon and Orange it seems very natural.

It is suggested to consult an aromatherapist regarding ingestion of oils. One drop of essential oil is equivalent to 15-50 cups of its herbal tea form. Ex: 1 drop of peppermint oil is roughly 27 cups of peppermint herbal tea. Also, be mindful of sensitization; if using a particular oil every day you should take a break after 2 or 3 months.

Because most oils aren’t made properly or are diluted with things that are unsafe. Always be sure of your brand. I’ve found NOW Essential oils and Doterra to be the safest.

It all depends on what brand you are using! Young living is 100% natural and totally safe for you to consume and ingest!

Hey Erica, my name is Carolyn and I wanted to chime in on this subject. I am a certified aromatherapist. I have explained in a comment down below why essential oils should not be ingested. Please take a look for your safety. Its really a shame that Young Living promotes ingestion of essential oils. Because its not safe. If you would like to learn about the safe use of essential oils you can find information of the NAHA and AIA website, as well as Robert Tisserand’s website. Safe blending 🙂

Some, yes. Need to do your research and make sure they’re edible. Also, getting the purest grade oils is also super important.

You shouldn’t be consuming that large amount of essential oil. Ever. And for a hangover there is no need to do so! Taken internally is only on the advice of a physician in France. Should tell you something. Sorry to be so strong about it, but would suggest you remove recommendation from your site.

Hey there, my name is Carolyn. I am a Certified Aromatherapist and wanted to talk about the unsafe usage of essential oils. This article really surprised me and serves as a prime example of misusing essential oils. Lets take a deeper look. Now the author obviously means no harm, and is writing this article in hopes to help people. However, their lack of knowledge on this subject has lead to misguided information. Essential oils should never be ingested with a glass of water, and should never be otherwise ingested without the supervision of a certified aromatherapist. Essential oils are OILS. As most people know, oil and water do not mix. This means you have droplets of pure essential oil in your water. Essential oils are lipophilic. This means they are lipid (fat) loving substances, they are drawn to fat and repelled by water. What is your mouth and organs made of? Lipids and fats. When you ingest essential oils, they stick to your mouth and esophagus because they are attracted to them and repelled by the water. This means your are absorbing a high dose of undiluted essential oil on the inside lining of your digestive tract, and will most likely be absorbed before they even get to your stomach. Not pretty.
Next lets talk about the massage oil blend. A safe massage oil dilution is 2%. This means 10-12 drops of essential oil per OUNCE of carrier oil. Yet the suggestion here is 8 drops of essential oil per 2 drops carrier oil…? I understand the need for a higher dilution because of acute pain due to a hangover. However, even 5% dilution would only be 25-30 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of carrier oil. So please guys, dilute your oils correctly and practice safe blending. Another note, be careful when buying orange essential oil, as some oils such as bitter orange, are phototoxic, while others such as sweet orange, are not phototoxic.
On a lighter note, I have no problem with the diffuser blend.

If you’re talking oils like those from Walmart, yes, never ingest them. If you’re talking oils like doTerra, those that have nutritional supplement labels are perfectly safe to ingest in the recommended quantity. Research it and get the facts.
