Camp-outs are a time for my kids and husband and I to unplug and pay attention to each other. We load up the car with the gear and food and leave the computers at the house. (ok honesty here – I take my phone so I can take pictures to remember it later).
Everything we do when we camp becomes memorable. Putting up the tent (David loves helping his daddy), riding bikes, the scary stories around the fire (listening to my kids make up “scary” stories is the best).
And I just love to sit back and watch my husband and kids all huddle around the fire pit, hot dogs on sticks, the meat blistering over the heat of the dancing flames. Occasionally one child coughs on the smoke and we all move to the other side.
Hot Dogs are always the main dish in the center of our camping experience. I hold my ice cold hard cider drink and lean back in the folding chair. But only for a millisecond, because immediately one of my three children needs help getting their hot dog onto a bun with ketchup, or (even worse) the hot dog fell into the fire. Again.
I’ll never forget when this picture (above) was taken. My family and I were all relaxing, exhausted, around the fire. We were in the Ozarks as part of a Coleman Camp Out. Lucy was excited about her new adventure but overly exhausted and cranky too. And boy did I feel the same! But you know what? My kids have asked to go back ever since.
