Have you heard of Zap Zap Math? It is a free app available for Android and Apple devices. After letting 5 year old Lucy play this app, I am thrilled to give this my seal of approval. I am going to explain what the app is, critique the usability, educational difficulty, and entertainment level.
What is Zap Zap Math
Zap Zap educational math app is created for children in grades K-6. It has math games of all levels. It comes with access to an online dashboard where you as a parent can track your child’s progress, strengths and weaknesses.
It does come in 2 versions – a free and a paid premium. The free version is available for kindergarten level only and a basic summary sheet of your child’s performance.
But the premium version gives you access to all levels of difficulty and a detailed report card.
Zap Zap Math Usability
I created an account and let my 5 year old start playing without my help. It was incredibly user friendly for her. It does come with a few written instructions, so it helps if your child can read first. Just like other games like Candy Crush Saga, a character will play different mini games along a road. Once a level is completed, the character moves to the next game. It is easy for non-readers to use this app after the welcome screen.
The app itself is one of the most intuitive apps for kids I have used. The only time Lucy needed my help was when a level was a bit too difficult math-wise.
Educational Difficulty
This is my favorite thing about this app! Lucy is 5 years old and going into 1st grade. She played the kindergarten level and even felt a little challenged by some of the concepts in the harder levels.
The following photo is a screenshot of a level Lucy really struggled with. She had to count the spaceships in the color it asked, then determine if the number of purple ships on the left was more than, less than, or equal to, the green ships on the right. She struggled because they threw in ships of other colors and so she lost count at times.
If your child is taught common core at school, this app is compliant with that curriculum.
Entertainment Level
It is rare to discover an app that is both educational and entertaining – Zap Zap Math nails it! The graphics rival every app I play and every level is different. It kept Lucy’s attention for hours.
What I’d Change About Zap Zap Math
The only thing I’d change to improve Zap Zap Math is I’d pay premium price if I had the ability to choose my child’s personal educational milestones. I’d like to be able to pick as specific as “double digit addition, beginning subtraction,” and so on. Right now you basically get the levels Zap Zap Math chooses based on grade levels.
