Many people look at Los Angeles or New York City as the places they must visit to start a successful acting career. In reality, those places aren’t always the ideal cities to get in the mix because of the tough competition involved.
Acting is one of those careers that makes all parents worry for their kids. I hope this post helps you find some other options that might help your child find acting jobs.
Manchester – United Kingdom
For aspiring actors, Manchester could well be the place to begin a successful acting career. With many theatres and BBC studios with portable stages right on their doorstep, starting in Manchester could provide your child with multiple career opportunities they need to get a name for themselves. It’s no Hollywood, but it does offer a much more affordable route to get their foot through the door in the acting industry.
Chicago – United States
Chicago is pretty much just one step down from New York City, so there’s less competition and thus more job opportunities. It’s the place to come if your child already resides in the United States and they haven’t had much luck in securing their acting future in New York. Chicago could be the learning curve they seek and it could provide them with many staging opportunities that might lead to other permanent roles.
Seattle – United States
If you don’t like the rain, Seattle shouldn’t be at the top of your child’s list of places to visit. However, if they are just looking to get their head into some acting, Seattle offers many stage theatre opportunities that could help them get their foot in the door. Michael Palance was born in New York, but he started doing stage work before he managed to break into the New York Film industry.
Dublin – Republic of Ireland
You only need to look as far as Colin Farrell, Pierce Brosnan, and Liam Neeson to see how Ireland has shaped some of the top actors in the game. Dublin has a bit of everything from TV and theatre opportunities, so it could be a good place to begin your child’s search for their first acting role. The above actors all started with small roles and now they’re some of Hollywood’s biggest stars – there’s nothing stopping your child from following in the same footsteps.
San Francisco
San Francisco should be one of the places at the top of the list primarily because it’s well known for its theatres and acting classes. Starting here could give your child the knowledge not only in terms of becoming a better actor but also understanding how the industry works.
Sometimes, it’s not about where your child is willing to work, it’s about what roles they are willing to consider to get their foot in the door. If they are willing to get involved with some of the smaller roles first, they will find their name attracts more exposure and it’ll be much easier to land bigger roles once they have plenty of experience on their resume.
