When I become a dedicated fan of a band, it is because they have heart, lyrics that move me, and musical talent.
The Whole Damn Mess is a band fronted by Don Miggs and it has all 3. I am officially hooked.
Heart
The band name “Whole Damn Mess” comes from how Don Miggs sees love. “It’s not just about feeling love but how love makes you feel. All of it. Real love. It’s heavy.” (source: Vents Magazine)
The album name is also romantic! It’s a tribute to his wife – she’s the queen and he is the outcast.
As he created this album, Don Miggs wanted to create art that meant something – not just a flash in the pan hit that is essentially meaningless. I honestly admire this pursuit. What Don and his band created is beautiful and shares something not many albums are producing – the beauty and mess of love.
“I want this music to be everything to someone, not something to everyone,” Miggs says. “I’d love to show people that no matter what you have, every day can still be the best day of your life. It can be the day that you do something that you’ve never done before. It would be cool if this album gave even one person the hope to dream a little bigger than they have been.”
Lyrics
Since the album was created from a place of love and romance and honesty, the lyrics are uplifting but also raw and vulnerable.
My favorite song is “And Then We Were.” Watch the lyric video below and you’ll see why it’s my favorite. The entire song documents his wedding day. The lyric “I blinked and then we were” just says so much with so little. If you listen, you will hear the album name in the lyrics, “The Queen and the Outcast.”
Another favorite song is “Anywhere Without You.” It’s about how true love is worth sacrificing for.
“Lisa laughs the long way / It’s like a Sunday drive on a Saturday / When I need saving / She’s grace / The dates are set / The tickets booked / We can kick and scream / But I’m on the hook / Oh don’t leave me / With that look / No no no / I don’t wanna’ go / Anywhere without you.”
Musical Talent
Whole Damn Mess is a downright fun rock band. They sound like they have a throwback vibe from 70s and 80s rock. There are elements of The Cure and Crowded House mixed in with the upbeat and lighthearted beats of Plain White Ts.
Don Miggs has a smooth voice that is fun to sing along with. The combination of lyrics and musical talent make this album one everyone should check out.
