Family units come in all shapes and sizes. No matter what you think of this, the traditional nuclear family arrangement is perhaps less popular than it used to be. If anything, this fact should be evidence to suggest that it’s not always tradition and blood that can make a great family. Most adoptees know that family isn’t in your genetics, but who raises you, who connects with you, and who you most cherish in the world. This is why people you’ve known since childhood become ‘uncle’ or ‘auntie’ to your children.
No matter how you define your personal family unit, blood or water, it’s important to consider just what it is that might ‘complete’ this group of loving individuals. What is it that ‘completes’ a family unit, if settling down for the long haul? What brings life and vitality to a home? What is it that gives you the sense of complete love, that helps you realize you’re in the right place after all? The feeling of belonging is massive, and somewhat necessary to live your best life.
In this article, we’re here to discuss how you might go about completing your family unit. We’re not suggesting one or all tips might work for you, or that your family is anything less without these, but perhaps applying one or two of these tidbits of advice could potentially help your home feel like the most welcoming and gorgeous place on Earth:
Bringing a pet into the home can complete your family unit, as they serve as an extra member of the family. A dog or a cat can become a true member of the family after some time, so long as you’re willing to treat them well and pet-proof your home. Children that grow up around pets begin to develop a respect for animals, and become likely to treat pets right as they begin to start their own family unit.
Pets can serve many different functions. You might wish to purchase a guard dog for your rural property, a comfortable house dog to cuddle in the evenings, or perhaps even put more effort into rescuing a dog to ensure they live a great life after handling mistreatment. So long as you keep in mind that owning a pet is a responsibility and not a toy, nor should it be brought into somewhat of a chaotic household, this could be a fantastic decision that you truly enjoy from day one. Just be sure your schedule warrants having a pet around, as even cats can thrive from the correct amount of social interaction. Also, ensure you know how to pet-proof your home before purchasing.
You might recall that in old households, particularly those in the landed gentry of medieval times, tapestries were quite a common item of furnishing. They still can be. Detailing the story, life history and most important events of a collective’s tale, they could serve as a mural to the wonder of the group of people it depicts. Of course, they weren’t only crafted to document real people, but that in no way detracts by how evocative and fascinating they can be. Why not craft your own family mural?
This might seem like a silly art piece to commission, and that it couldn’t complete your family unit. But we’d suggest that crafting a mural through hiring an artist, or even developing one yourself, could be an excellent use of your time through and through. Not only could a mural depict the life story you have all come to know and love, but honor the personalities of everyone in your household.
You might have a tapestry weaved and hung in the front corridor of your household, paint an entire wall top to bottom that you add to over time, or even have a more creative piece commissioned from an artist you respect. A mural is a great and too infrequent means of offering your best selves to a timeless art piece. Who knows, perhaps one day in the future someone will study this item for historical value, or a member of your posterity might treasure it deeply. While you’re at it, why not develop a coat of arms and a motto for your household? The fun to be had here is nearly unlimited.
There might not be a need for grandiose efforts dedicated to proving how good of a family unit you are. It might be that simply crafting more time to be with one another could be the best thing you do. Simply implementing a ‘taco tuesday’ night, or a ‘board game sunday’ night, or even a ‘movie marathon monday’ night, or however many silly titles you can come up with, could be perfect to get people together engaged in an activity. No matter what your family set up, taking the evening meal together can also be fantastic if working and life schedule allow for this.
It might be that a family unit is connected, deeply appreciative of one another, and absolutely, thoroughly comfortable in the home. But alas, there is no communal space arranged for everyone to hang out together comfortably. It might be something as silly and simple as an extra sofa that encourages everyone to hang out together in the evenings instead of splintering off into their own personal spaces. It might be that heading out to dinner, or attending a show, or even going to the nightclub can bring a select family unit together, helping everyone enjoy each other’s company, forge memories, and intertwine the day of each individual with every other individual around. That, in our mind, makes for a pretty special family unit.
Celebrating the family unit can help everyone realize just how lucky they are to be a part of it. If birthday’s aren’t usually a massive thing in your home, make them be. Try to make each Christmas better than the last. And finally, be sure to share in food together as often as possible, as this is perhaps the most primal means of showing love known to humankind.
With these simple tips, completing your family unit with one of these activities, purchases or attitudes could be the best thing you ever do for your household.
