This paper plate craft is easy and fun for preschoolers. It’s educational too – teaching them how a sunflower grows! It even has free printable sunflowers at the end!

Fun Paper Plate Craft For Preschoolers
Are you looking for something fun and different to do with your little one? This craft could be just the thing! Parts of it are set up to encourage independent play (yay!).
It’s also a great way to teach them about why sunflowers need sunshine to grow, and gluing the sunflower seeds is a way to develop those fine motor skills too!

How To Do The Growing Sunflowers Craft
I have a printable craft card a little further below at the bottom of this post. In this card, I have all the tools and supplies you need along with detailed instructions. Skip on down to it or keep reading for some helpful information and tricks.
Grab All Of Your Supplies
First things first, get all your supplies together. You probably already have everything you need in your house!
- Paper Plates
- Crayons
- Scissors
- Glue
- Popsicle Craft Sticks
- Free Printable Sunflowers

Print The Sunflowers
Download and print the free sunflower blossoms here! This is a free PDF template just from me to you.
Then, cut them out and set them aside.
Since you are going to glue sunflower seeds to the sunflowers, print it out on heavy-duty cardstock. Otherwise, the wet glue will make the printer paper wrinkle in an awful way.

Color the Outdoor Scene
This is the part that your preschooler can do alone. Color the grass, sky, and sunshine on the paper plate.
If you have older kids that want to do this too, maybe let them use acrylic paint or watercolors!

Make Your Paper Sunflowers
Remember those sunflowers you printed out? Here is where you will be using them.
If you want to make the craft last a little bit longer, ask your child to paint the craft sticks green. They can use real paint or even markers!

Glue The Flowers To The Sticks
For this step just a dab of white glue is enough. Let it set for a minute to dry. Then, flip the flowers over and begin gluing the seeds.
Best Type of Sunflower Seeds To Use
Use seeds that are in their shells for this craft. Unshelled sunflower seeds are so much easier to glue to the paper!

Glue Seeds To The Flowers
If you are feeling really ambitious, you can turn this part into an educational activity. Here are a few ways to do that.
- Teach Addition – add up how many sunflowers they can fit on one flower. What is 3 + 3?
- Count in Spanish
- Teach What Seeds Do
- Explain Why Seeds Need the Sun

Cut A Slit In The Paper Plate
While the sunflower seeds are drying, cut a slit in the paper plate. This is easier with a razor. If you don’t have one, just fold the plat and cut on the fold.
Show How The Sunflower Grows
This is the fun part! Put the sunflower they just made in the slit, just above the grass. By pulling on the stick they can make the sunflower grow and shrink!
