Friday night (August 13th) a severe thunderstorm tore through eastern Manhattan in Pottawatomie County. The worst part of town to get hit was east of Dillons on Highway 24. Dara’s Fast Lane lost part of their awning above the gas pumps, Sirloin Stockade’s sign was badly damaged and there were power lines down as well.
My mother in law was in Dillons when she was herded with the other customers to the produce cooler in the back of the store.
Jerry Hutchinson, owner of KHCA Angel 95 FM said he was texting with an employee of Mercy Regional Health Center who reported the ICU’s main power supply went out at one point.
It was a very fast moving storm – national weather service reported it was moving 45 mph. And it was not a tornado, just super strong winds that tore through town!
I don’t live very close to this storm so my house escaped very much damage, but my cable box did not escape the winds. Thankfully they fixed it without me having to call them! I was only without cable for about 24 hours – which feels like an eternity to a mom blogger! I am just thankful it was not a tornado.
My mother in law called me when they were directing her to the back of the store and she told me a storm was coming my way and since I don’t have a basement I should drive to my brother in law’s house who does. We live pretty well east of the storm so I was able to drive there with little problems. It was a lot of rain and kinda windy but I wasn’t driving through the windiest parts thankfully. And like I said, since we live so much East and south of the storm it went around us so going to there house was not totally needed, but better safe than sorry!
How was your weekend?
Glad everyone is ok!
I am so happy that you are safe and okay! And your MIL as well! Storms drive me crazy because of how wild they can get! 24 hours without cable isn’t bad. This past winter we lost power in a blizzard for 3 days. So cold! Especially with a 5 month old an an almost 3 year old, and hotels were PACKED since everyone didn’t have power. And now I’m rambling with my story lol.
we had a scary storm sunday afternoon here in wichita. I drove home to Newton in it. We were driving like 60 mph and got ahead of it at one point but it caught back up to us. It was very heavy rain and strong winds (had to be close to 60 to keep pace with us). I had cramps in my hands and arms because i was gripping the steering wheel so hard.
When we got home we checked the radar and that exactly what was happening so my dad stayed an hour longer so wouldnt have to drive back to manhattan in it.
Wow, that’s some weekend! Thankfully no one got hurt. Here’s to hoping this weekend is a lot calmer for you!
Crazy!!! So glad you guys are safe!
