Last week I was given the honor to work with the Kansas Farm Bureau and Kansas Soybean Commission and two other bloggers to take a tour of a local farm. It was a super early morning, but totally worth it! I traveled up to Kansas City with Meagan from Kansas Farm Bureau and met up with everyone there. I was thrilled to see Chef Alli again! And the bloggers were all greeted with overflowing gift baskets, stuffed full of products from local Kansas-owned companies. And you see those white boxes? We each get to give away a box to one lucky reader (giveaway is at the end of this post).
We hopped on the bus and met the kind and welcoming Tuttles. They have a large grain farm where they grow grains for cattle feed – hard winter wheat, corn, and soybeans. He even brought out samples of the grains so we could feel and see what the grains look like.
Immediately after learning about the grains, their niece who lives near them brought out her daughter’s 4H bucket calf, Snowflake. He was such a soft little guy! But man was he stubborn. He did not want to go back to the barn, even though we were on the gravel driveway and there wasn’t anything for him to do there. He was such a sweetheart.
We passed their chicken coop and saw their free range chickens. I didn’t snap any pictures because I have backyard chickens and so was much more interested in the pregnant mama cow immediately ahead. The day of the tour was her due date, so the Tuttles kept on eye on her, hoping they wouldn’t have to pull a calf in front of us. (Now that would have been a tour I would never forget!)
We also met their sweet little baby goats! They are so incredibly cute (at this age!). I will never ever own goats again. Not after the sick goat in the kitchen fiasco. But these were precious little kids and it was fun to talk with them and pet them.
They also have a pygmy horse and a goat in a big area of pasture behind their house. The tour concluded with a chat about this horse and goat and the cattle behind. It was an absolutely perfect day for the tour! We also saw their pet bunny and were offered a quick ride in their John Deere tractor.
Left to right you see Mandy from Sugar Bee Crafts, Angela from Handmade in the Heartland, me, and the Tuttles! It was a total blast and didn’t end here!
We were treated to lunch at Chef Renee Kelly’s Harvest! There will be an entirely separate post about this place, I loved it so much! It is all organic, locally sourced (when possible). She’s working with local farmers to see if she can purchase Non-GMO too. Renee Kelly is amazing and the food was out of this world!
I had a blast and now I get to give away a basket of Kansas goodies to YOU!
