The color green is said to symbolize greed, envy, wealth and growth. I was born in August and my birthstone is Peridot. When I wear this color, I feel happy. The light green lets more light into the stone, and as I see the light glistening through it, I feel pretty.
That is why I am thrilled to be working with Fragments to chat with you about my favorite gemstone. What is your birthstone? And is it one of your favorite stones to wear in jewelry?
Peridot is often confused with emerald. In fact, “some historians believe that Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection might actually have been peridot, and for centuries, people believed the fabulous 200-ct. gems adorning the shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Germany’s Cologne Cathedral were emeralds. They are, in fact, peridots. (Gemological Institute of America)”
Turns out, my feelings of happiness when I wear my birthstone might not be just in my head. There are people that believe this stone has healing properties:
Wearing a peridot is believed to promote peace of mind and calmness and to heal depression and mental illness. Ground peridot has been dissolved in water and drunk as a cure for asthma, and it is believed in some traditions that placing a peridot under the tongue would reduce thirst in a feverish person.

Above is a pair of emerald earrings. I can understand how the two are easily confused. The darkest peridot looks almost identical to an emerald. In fact, it takes a trained eye to notice the difference. I love wearing green. In fact, I think it is one of the few colors that flatters just about every single hair, skin and eye shade. (I cannot wear yellow, no matter how hard I try).
I have to admit, the other thing I adore about peridot (vs other birthstones like, say, April), is the affordability! You can find some rare, valuable shades of this jewel (the more clear and vibrant the green, the higher the price) but typically I can find peridot rings in my price range. If you’re looking for a ring to give as a gift, you may want to visit sites like https://gemaandco.com/collections/oval-moissanite-engagement-rings and you may also consider your partner’s birthstone when picking the ring. The trilogy diamond engagement rings from Certified Diamond Network is trending this year.
What about you? What is your birthstone and have you researched the history of it? I find the history of gems so fascinating! Here is additional reading about birthstones.
