This time of year can wreak havoc on your skin and hair. As the winds and rain of fall arrive, we begin to constantly move between the cold from outdoor temperatures and the drying heat from indoor central heating; all in all, winter can be tough on our epidermis. You may have already noticed symptoms such as cracking and dryness, or perhaps an oilier than usual complexion that leads to breakouts (most likely caused by your skin’s natural tendency to ramp up its defenses by producing more sebum).
On top of immediate concerns about moisture levels, it would be wise to keep in mind that just because the sun isn’t shining, the damaging UVA and UVB rays, which cause premature aging are still a threat to your complexion. Thankfully, we’ve compiled our list of the best natural and DIY defenses out there to help you cope.
Nourishing Oils
We’ve written plenty about essential oils and their benefits on Mama Dweeb in the past, but specifically, what are the saviors of dry, winter skin? To name a few – coconut, almond, and argan oils are super-skin quenchers!
These wonder oils are not only skin nourishing and effective moisturizers – they do their job while being 100% natural and chemical-free. You can introduce the products gradually into your routine by using the oils as a supplement to your existing moisturizer. If you find yourself experiencing breakouts at this time of year, a little dab of organic tea tree oil directly on to the pimple (you can do this before bed to avoid the strong smell throughout the day) will calm and reduce the offending zit.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is your ultimate ally against premature aging, 365 days a year. Apply some each day as part of your beauty routine and in time you will be astonished at how well it prevents the formation and worsening of fine lines and wrinkles.
Although, most sunscreens are chemical-based, there are natural alternatives on the market if you opt for mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide. Check out Organic Authority’s thorough review of every natural sunscreen on the market to find a formula that meets your needs for everyday use!
Of course, it’s important to protect your eyes as well. Low-lying winter sun can be hazardous –particularly if you’re driving during winter mornings – so sunglasses are a must. A brand name retailer such as Edel Optics help you pick up a quality pair of sunglasses that offer total 100% UVA and UVB protection.
Rice Water Facial
Rice water has been used for centuries to achieve beautiful skin! It’s known for anti-inflammatory and brightening properties, without the drying side effect of some cleansers and toners – making it perfect for the winter months.
Best of all, it’s ridiculously easy to make: simply take about a cup of rice, rinse thoroughly to remove any grit or impurities and place in a bowl of water to soak for around 30 minutes, swirling gently to release the rice’s goodness. At this point, drain the cloudy liquid into a clean container – you can then soak a cotton pad in the water and use as a toner, or use as an alternative to soap to wash your face.
Once you have a mix made up you can continue to use it for around 3-4 days, and up to a week in a sealed container in the fridge. Remember that the longer you keep the rice in the water, the more potent the water will become. If you have sensitive skin, you may wish to change your rice water every couple of days to prevent fermentation which could make the mixture too potent.
