As a fun break from all the product reviews and giveaways I want to chat about one of my favorite actors of all time – Johnny Depp.
I naturally gravitate to people that can play a plethora of characters and do it flawlessly. Dustin Hoffman is #1 in my book for acting abilities. He can be a magical toy store owner, a pirate captain and a young adult with autism – all with the same believability.
My other favorite actor is Liam Neeson. From a Jedi Master, to the caring parent of a love sick young boy I enjoy almost all of his films.
Recently Johnny Depp spoke with Vanity Fair about his many obtuse roles. I am personally amazed at his talent. I dare say there is not a role he cannot play successfully. From my fandom of him I have learned that he prefers the odder roles and would rather not play a love interest. His goal is not to be the sexiest man in the world but to act and enjoy his roles.
In this article he told Vanity Fair that all of his alter egos are gay. This conversation started from concern from Disney higher ups that the way he acted as Jack Sparrow was too weird and one lady asked if Captain Sparrow was perhaps gay. Depp responded, “But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?”
This makes total sense – even look at Willy Wonka, or the Mad Hatter. But I have to challenge Mr. Depp. Perhaps he was exaggerating because one of my favorite movies of his is Chocolat and that character is most certainly not gay. He plays a guitar playing gypsy that travels by water with his band of family and friends. And Depp’s character has a wonderful chemistry with the main character played by Juliette Binoche.
Take a look at this scene and tell me – straight or gay?

I love johnny depp, he was seriously born to be a fabulous actor! How does he do it?
donna says
whats your point? i don’t get it.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
My point is that while Johnny might have told Disney that all his characters he portrays in film he acts as though they are gay, I disagree. I found a film where he is definitely straight and actually pretty normal. Chocolat is not the normal kind of film he acts in.
I just wanted to see what others thought of this news. I linked to the original news story but you can find it on CBS news and other places. I like a good chat on my blog about something totally random like Johnny Depp.

I love Johnny Depp, but my Husband won’t even watch his movies because he already thought the characters were all gay! I hate how he refuses to watch certain movies because he doesn’t like the cast, so many of my favorites are on his “Do Not Watch While I’m Home” list.

Wondering if HE is gay now? Hmmmmm????
Mari says
I don’t think his characters are gay, I think he was just having fun with the interviewer. He brings a playful, rascal kind of sensibility to his roles, which is why it may come off as “gay”.
It would be easy for a man of his good looks to play a romantic lead (like Matthew mcconoughey, for ex), but I think he feels like he needs to challenge himself as an actor by taking character roles.
Personally, I felt he stole every scene in the pirates series. Keira or Orlando could be replaced by any young face, but Johhny brought something unique to the films.

Great article – LOL – I think he likes to mess around with “the man” (who is Disney case Disney). He has been my fav actor since 21 Jump Street – whoa I feel old – I will watch ever movie he is in- whether he is gay, green, has 10 arms, I don’t care – it is hard to match that kind of acting.
Krystyn says
He can’t be gay..it’s not right.
And, yes, in Chocolat…definitely not gay!
Christine M says
Chocolat is one of my fav movies I’m not a huge Johnny Depp fan but found it interesting that he would make that comment. I think he was just joking
Zuzu says
Oh, come on. Why so serious? Can’t you tell that he was yanking their chain, making fun of them? Management is always brain dead. Who cares who is gay and who is not? He should never have been asked that question in the first place. Isn’t good work good enough anymore?
Melody says
He was being sarcastic. Clearly not ALL his characters are gay. And Chocolat is a perfect example of that! I think he just enjoys having that ambiguous side to his characters. Frankly I always feel like most of them are like children and therefore would have no sexual orientation at all.
Dealectable Mom says
OMG I never realized it until now! Every character is totally gay! Love it and love him!
Penelope says
I think he was being funny, lol.
He complains about being seen as sexy, but it got him roles. If he wasn’t so handsome, he might have more appreciation for being blessed with good features. And how else does he expect to get those models he’s always with?
