How can cleaning house burn calories and fat? I had no idea until I strapped on my Polar FT40 Heart Rate Monitor and tried it for myself. The heart rate monitor keeps track of your heart rate and beeps when I go above fat burning BPMs and into fitness.
The higher your heart rate when you exercise, the less fat your burn. So keep it in a lower range and work out for a longer period of time to burn more fat!
When I cleaned house, I did it for an hour. As I folded clothes, I ran clothes to their rooms. After completing a chore, I either did burpees, jumping jacks, jump squats, or lunges. So it wasn’t a leisurely pick-up time, it was a fat-blasting hour! (and it kept me interested in the house work, I totally suggest this method)
Check out the fat burning percentage here. I did high-cardio for half an hour (mostly running on the treadmill). Yes, I burned lots of calories, but my fat burning was only 11% – that is less than half of what I burned cleaning house.
This reaffirms what my personal trainer friend told me – to burn fat you need to focus on weights, not running and cardio.
Another feature I love about my Polar heart rate monitor is that you can take a fitness test and it tells you how in shape you are. It measures your at-rest oxygen levels. According to the test, I am barely below average. This motivates me to continue working out to improve my fitness level and become healthier!

Dude. I clean house like this all the time! For real! I find it DOES keep me more interested and I feel like I’m a bad a** cause I can workout and clean house. 😉
Keep up the good “work”!

I got a Polar heart rate monitor last year for Christmas but haven’t used it lately (I had to quit my gym do to a bum knee) but never in a million years though housework could count! I love my Polar system and am excited I can start using it outside the gym – thanks for the tip!!
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
You gotta start using it LOL 🙂 Seriously, you can make up random work outs (I personally love finding ideas on Pinterest) and if you aren’t working hard enough, increase the intensity. So fun! No gym needed 🙂

I wish I had the energy for housework. You burned a lot of calories.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
You have a really great excuse for not having energy, Crystal! LOL One more month, I know you are feeling so ready!

My favorite way is walking. I could walk forever and still enjoy it!

Walking is awesome!! I walked all the time during my pregnancies (and it never did a thing for starting labor LOL)

Cleaning house does indeed burn calories. So does cleaning out your fridge (it helps to teach you what you should never buy again).
