This month, we are going to make some easy DIY home cleaners! 

 Who doesn’t enjoy a fresh smelling, sparkling clean home? I know I do! But over the last few years, I began to think more about what I was using to get rid of the unsightly grime. Sadly, I discovered I was adding to the toxicity of my family’s environment. 

Now I know there’s enough mama guilt out there to paralyze even the most conscientious parent, so let me say this is a no judgment zone! Like all my monthly goal posts, my aim is to set reasonable, doable goals that can be achieved in the mix and hustle of everything else on your plate. 

The amount of information and recipes for DIY home cleaners out there can seem daunting. My suggestion is to start small with products you frequently use – and I’ve done half the work for you by providing some of my favorite homemade cleaners below. So seize the opportunity with me and try your hand at these wonderfully aromatic, effective DIY spring cleaners using essential oils and inexpensive, natural ingredients.   

Products You Need

This is what you need if you want to make your own essential oil home cleaners.

• Washing Soda
• Baking Soda
• Liquid Castile Soap
• Glass Spray Bottle
• Wide-Mouthed Mason Jar
• White Vinegar
• Rubbing Alcohol

DIY Home Cleaners

DIY Lemon-Lime All Purpose Spray Cleaner Recipe

In a 16oz glass container with a spray nozzle, add the following ingredients:

• 1¾ cups of water
• 1 teaspoon washing soda
• 1 teaspoon liquid castile soap (unscented)
• 15 drops lemon essential oil
• 15 drops lime essential oil
• 10 drops melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil

Mix gently by turning the bottle end over end several times.

You can use it on an of the following non-porous surfaces:  

• Kitchen and bathroom surfaces
• Sinks
• Faucets
• Windows
• Mirrors
• Wood
• Even semi-gloss painted walls.

Washing soda deodorizes while cutting grease and grime. It can even dissolve hard water soap scum! When scrubbing tough surfaces, a scouring pad works well, while newspaper is fantastic for streak free windows and mirrors. Fizzing Sink & Tub Scrub

• 1/2 cup baking soda
• 15-20 drops of essential oil
• 1/4-1/2 cup pure liquid castile soap

Start with ½ cup baking soda and add 15-20 drops of essential oil, such as melaleuca, wild orange or lemon.

A cleaning blend and an immunity boosting blend also work amazingly well in this scrub. (Contact me to find out my favorite essential oil blends)

Stir in ¼ to ½ cup of unscented, pure liquid castile soap to the soda and essential oil mixture until you get the consistency of a thick paste.

Scrub the paste onto your sink surfaces, tub and even on glass shower doors. Once the area you want to treat has been scoured, rinse with white vinegar and watch it fizz as a chemical reaction occurs. Continue to rinse with a half and half water and vinegar solution (can be mixed in a spray bottle) until the scrub and grime have been washed away. 

Extra Tips: If you need to remove mold and mildew in addition to soap scum, mix a half and half solution of hydrogen peroxide and water, spray generously on shower or bath surfaces and come back one hour later to scrub with a tough bristled brush. This cleaner can be simplified and used in a toilet – pour the ½ cup of baking soda directly in a flushed toilet and let soak for 20-30 minutes. Scrub with toilet brush, add vinegar and scrub one last time. Flush and enjoy a fresh, clean toilet!  

Invigorating Hard Surface Floor Cleaner –

Mix ½ gallon warm water in a bucket with:

• 1 cup vinegar
• ¾ cup rubbing alcohol
• 1 teaspoon pure liquid castile soap
• 10 drops peppermint oil
• 10 drops wild orange essential oil.

The alcohol helps create a streak-free shine because it evaporates quickly while the vinegar and essential oils cleanse and sanitize. This can be used on laminate, tile and wood floors, as well as on stainless steel surfaces, windows and mirrors.

For a  quick and ready version, combine 1 cup water, ½ cup vinegar, ¼ cup alcohol, 3 drops liquid castile soap, 5 drops peppermint oil and 5 drops wild orange oil in a glass spray bottle and use with a microfiber cloth. Note: do not use on granite surfaces. 

Super Easy Uplifting Carpet Freshener –

• Baking Soda
• Essential Oils

All you need for this incredibly simple carpet deodorizer are two ingredients: baking soda and essential oils. Simply stir in 10-15 drops of essential oil into 1 cup of baking soda. I like using about 8 drops each of peppermint oil and melaleuca oil. A cleaning blend also works wonders as a cleanser and deodorizer.

Sprinkle the oil and soda mixture over your carpet, thicker in areas with a distinct odor and lightly over your entire carpeted area. Using your hands, rub all the baking soda mixture deep into the carpet. Leave it to deodorize for 1 to 24 hours, then vacuum normally. Your house and carpet will smell fresh and uplifting, which will help keep you motivated to keep on with your spring cleaning!
