I just finished watching the most recent episode of Nashville. It was deep, it had me balling my eyes out. But the biggest thing that struck me? Was how much I felt single moms have in common with these singers/stars! I know, it’s TV and made up…but still. Moms, check out this list and see if you agree. Also? Tell me what you would add to it! And raise your glass, you deserve it!
10 Things Single Moms Have in Common With Rock Stars
- They run on drugs – I’m not talking street drugs, I’m talking about how moms rely on coffee to help them function in the morning and more caffeine to push them throughout the day then wine to calm their anxious mind at night. Rock stars are running at a furious pace – it is almost superhuman all they accomplish. Same with moms.
- People are always watching and judging them – Rock stars have paparazzi, moms have themselves. You know how the tabloids publish the most unflattering photos and print lies? Moms do that to themselves every single day. Rock stars have cameras watching their every move, moms have children who will imitate the worst moves in the most embarrassing public places possible. For relaxation, take on a small tour to Worcestershire to a breath of fresh air. Here are the things to do in Worcestershire to enjoy the weather wisely.
- There is no down time – Rock stars try to catch a few zzzz’s on the tour bus between shows then have to be whisked away for back-to-back press junkets. Moms try desperately to sleep in their overcrowded bed (thanks kids) then have to face work and play practice and meal planning and bed time routines…
- Everyone needs a piece of them – Interviews, social media, concerts, rock stars are always giving. Moms experience the same thing. Children, PTO, church, work – everyone needs their time and energy.
- They pour out their heart on a daily basis – Musicians I admire and love share their pain and joy in front of millions in their songs. Moms feel their hearts being pulled from their chest on a daily basis.
- There is always someone better – No matter how many chart-topping hits a singer has, there is always someone hungrier with more talent ready to snatch that away. And moms, you know there is always that mom – the Pinterest perfect birthday parties, the slim figure, the super smart and talented children. Playing the comparing game is a pit of despair for both.
- People are counting on them not to fail – Musicians are always reminded how much their label has invested in them, how much it will hurt everyone around them if they fail. You screw up and end up in the tabloids? It affects your family, the label, and so many more. If moms screw up, the entire future of their child’s psyche is at stake.
- It’s easy to lose sight of why they started – There are nights moms sit in their room and cry and wonder “why did I ever have children? What the hell was I thinking?” Rock stars do the same thing. The stress, the anxiety, the pain – it overwhelms and cripples.
- They have to wear many hats – Musicians do more than grab a mic and sing. They are fashion icons, business leaders, communicators, and fluent in PR and marketing. You single moms wear ALL THE HATS. It is you and only you. All the time.
- They can get lost in the shuffle – With everyone taking pieces of you and demanding more, who takes care of you? Rock stars break down for this reason – remember Britney? Always giving, never reserving time to care for yourself.
Single moms, this is for you. The biggest rock star of them all. You live life in the fast lane. Instead of a Grammy or an Emmy, you get to hold up your child’s high school diploma with pride. Instead of late-night hotel-trashing, you get to enjoy late-night bed-crashing. But one thing is for damn sure – those kisses and hugs you get? They are worth far more than any number one song on the radio.

Great post Annie! Makes me interested in watching Nashville, but more importantly – thank you for recognizing how hard it is to be a mom, especially a single mom. Thank you!

Thank you so much Cassidy. I know how hard single parents have it. I helped my mom raise my younger siblings when she worked full time as a single parent.
This post can definitely be for military spouses too.

I’m a fan of Nashville too. It’s crazy the roller coaster life they live….as I guess single moms do too?
