Beyond my obvious disdain for my weight – the way my clothes don’t fit and everyone asks if I am pregnant – I realize how unhealthy it is. The extra weight you carry around your stomach is actually the most unhealthy weight to carry.
According the the Harvard Medical School, belly fat can signal and unhealthy heart.
“The fat around the belly is particularly metabolically active, meaning that it produces a number of factors that increase the risks for heart disease,” explains Dr. Paula Johnson, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Those factors include hormones and other substances that promote inflammation, raise blood pressure, alter cholesterol levels, and interfere with normal blood vessel activity.

So, I got a gym membership. Can I just tell you how difficult it is to get enough sleep at night to have the energy to work a full time job and be a mom and work out? I’m struggling, hard core. I can’t wake up in the morning and at the end of the day, I just want to crash. But I keep trying!!
I’m tracking what I eat. Using My Fitness Pal to record my calories and food is helping me realize I am eating the wrong kids of foods! I’m staying within my calorie limits, but my sugars levels are too high and my fiber and vitamins are way too low.
To help me cook the best foods for my heart, I’ve enjoyed referencing this free cookbook. It has 15 Easy Heart Healthy Recipes. I’ve also used these recipes to help me create more recipes by changing them just slightly to create entirely new meals that are just as healthy.
Since heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, we have to do all we can to increase our health. Eat right, and get up and move. I know it isn’t always that easy – my full time desk job makes my FitBit cry – but we have to keep trying.
