Johnny Depp recently told UK tabloid The Guardian that he though his most recent film “Rum Diary” is going to be a huge hit everywhere – except in Wichita, Kan. What he has against his Wichita fans I have no idea!
Here is what he said:
I believe that this film, regardless of what it makes in, you know, Wichita, Kansas, this week – which is probably about $13 – it doesn’t make any difference,” he said. “I think it’s an intelligent film…And a lot of times, outside the big cities in the States, they don’t want that.
Wow. I am speechless. I used to be a fan of Johnny’s. I love his accent, his acting talent, and thought he was a pretty intelligent fellow. Apparently he forgot to think before he gave that quote. Does the rest of the world think Kansans all have horses hitched to the general store? Or was Johnny merely saying people in the midwest wouldn’t like his movie because it went against their “Bible belt” values?
I realize he made a mistake and I hope he regrets this. What a fail.

I’ve never been a huge fan of his! I’m so stunned by what he said that I can’t even form a complete sentence that showcases my feeling with nice language.

You were one of the first people I thought of when I heard about this Jennifer! I’m stunned too. His movie will really fail if he says crap like this.

Hi Annie,
You’re right, that is an odd quote. I look forward to connecting with you more through our BlogFrog community. Take care!
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
Thanks Fawn! I am working on getting my community up and going – where is the time? LOL

What a weird statement to make. It doesn’t even make sense!
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
I know! And what a random city to pick on. I mean really? Wichita? So odd
Fawn says
I know you mean! Well, once you find the time just let me know and I’ll join :).

I’m a huge fan of Johnny Depp, but he is a tad on the eccentric side and you never know what he is going to do or say. However, what he said was a direct slam against the Wichita, Kansas residents and there is no excuse for such a nasty remark. Basically, from the quote, I take it that he is saying the people in Wichita are too unintelligent to be able to identify with his movie so it won’t appeal to them. He should apologize for his statement!

He said “I think it’s an intelligent film…And a lot of times, outside the big cities in the States, they don’t want that.” I think Wichita was just a random city that he said off the top of his head. His real meaning is that most of America (as most of America is outside a big city) does not want intelligent films, and he used Wichita as an example. Obviously he also thinks someone from rural south Mississippi wouldn’t enjoy an intelligent movie – oh wait, he probably thinks we do not even know what a movie is.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
I totally agree with your interpretation C. It is a shame he thinks that Americans outside of big cities don’t enjoy intelligent films. I guess he thinks we care more about trashy TV than anything that exercises our minds.

Wow, what was the point of him saying something like that? Too bad!
Jennifer says
I personally don’t think it was a direct stab at Wichita. From what I got from the quote he just randomly said a city/stae. He could have said anywhere and it would I guess offend someone from that city.
I think he just meant that post people won’t be able to “get” this movie.
I never planned on watching it because even from the commercial I didn’t understand it.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
Considering he has never spent time in Wichita (that I know of) I doubt it was a direct stab either. He totally made a mistake with this quote because if he wanted to say “this movie is difficult to understand and won’t appeal to lots of people” there are lots of better ways to say that than insulting middle America.
Jennifer says
I agree, he could have. But then again, Johnny is known for out outlandish ways.
I don’t ever take anything he says personally because he is so weird, lol.

Here, they mixed two different quotes (from different questions/answers) probably to make it sounds more “scandalous” than it actually was, that’s why it sounds odd…
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
If the guardian put two quotes together then shame on them. That is horrible journalism. However, it DID get their name spread around the internet, so I guess it worked for them.
I never thought of the possibility of them putting two quotes together into one. That really explains a lot.
Jennifer @therebelchick says
I assume that he was using Wichita as a blanket reference to small towns, which is really weird, because Depp grew up in Miramar, FL…which is basically just a trailer park – I worked there for 7 years so I speak from experience. LOL
Now that he lives in Europe, he’s too cool for small towns. Jerk.
