I love Evernote! Ever since I heard Melissa of MomComm was teaching a course all about organizing your editorial calendar with Evernote, I knew I had to check out this app. (sidenote: the course is called Content Brew and that link is an affiliate link – I 100% back it up, so check it out!)
After trying out Evernote, I became quite obsessed. It can handle so much more than I will touch on here. I just wanted to share the nine basic features of Evernote.
To make this easy, I labeled the features with numbers and will explain what they do. If you want detailed screenshots about how to use Evernote as a blogging platform, The Tech Chick wrote a wonderful post! It also explains how to share your notebooks with other people.
Introduction to Evernote’s Features
- Title of Note – Name it something searchable. Evernote’s search capabilities are top notch and you can stay even more organized if you make the names keyword-specific.
- Name of Notebook – You can make as many notebooks as you need. This helps you keep business and personal notes separated. Opening notebooks is super simple, just one easy click. Definitely create different notebooks, you will love being that organized.
- Tags – The searchability of evernote is really amazing! Make the searching job easier by using lots of keyword tags for your note. If you ever forgot what word you used last to tag, you can find all your tags in the left sidebar under “current tags.” Using too many variations of the same word (like recipes or recipe) might lead to less organization and worse search results.
- Checkable boxes – My favorite! Click this button and it puts a checkable box in your post! You can easily create a shopping list, sync it to your mobile device, then check off items at the store! Love this task-app feature.
- Insert a table – When you click this you can choose what size of table and how much of the screen you want it to take up. Then, it puts the empty cells into your note! Spreadsheet geeks rejoice! It can do tables.
- This is just a horizontal line. Not much else to say, but it breaks up different parts of a note really nicely.
- Record and insert voice memos – This is way too easy! Just click the mic, record your audio, then it inserts the clip into your note.
- Record and insert video – When you click this circle button, it brings up a webcam recording. Record your video then it inserts the video into your note.
- Attach a file in the note – Finally! I can attach files from my desktop computer without having to send myself an email! It accepts any file type.
There ya go! Now what other questions do you have about Evernote? What do you use it for the most?
I also created a vlog walking you through even more features of Evernote. Please let me know what you liked and especially what you want to learn more of. I will do a part 2 if there is demand.

I took the Content Brew class and LOVED it. The only thing I haven’t been able to get into is Evernote – not because I don’t see the value, but because I get a lot of my ideas while I’m at work (where I can’t load Evernote) and then forget them before I get a chance. Now, I’ve downloaded the Evernote app, so hopefully that will help me keep on top of things!

I have heard so many amazing things about the content brew course! Glad you enjoyed it too! 🙂
I really hope the Evernote app helps you enjoy it more. I love how it syncs up to practically every single device.

That was really helpful, thanks! A visual demonstration is always more helpful for me than just a written description. I’m glad that it works on a Mac! Now I would just like to know how to get your friends and family to start using it so you can sync your notes with them. 🙂

People were singing the praises of Evernote at Type A as well. Apparently I need to get on board with this!!

LOL Jill!! Yeah, it is such a cool app. I don’t know what you use for a task manager/keeping all your info synced right now, but this is a workhorse!

This looks great! I’m always looking for an easy way to remember my list of things to do, ideas for blog posts, etc. I’m going to have to try this out! 🙂

Have I ever told you that you’re my favorite dweeb ever! Thanks for the blog and all the information.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
oh my word Tami!! you made my night!! Glad you found this helpful. Oh and please let me know if there are any other topics you have questions about. Tweet me, facebook me, email – whatever. I get ideas for posts from people. The idea for this post came from a comment on my first Evernote post. Someone on facebook commented and asked “I wish Evernote let you use check boxes” and I was like “dude! they do!” and wrote this. LOL!

I am going to share this with my co-workers. We use this on our iPads and really enjoy it.
Annie @ Mama Dweeb says
Thank you Andrew! I have noticed that there are FAR MORE editing options on the desktop app vs. the tablet/mobile version. Thankfully it all syncs up so you can make it look pretty on the desktop version LOL

I have heard of Evernote, but haven’t looked into it before. Thank you for the information. I am going to start using Evernote for some stuff now. I looked around and it is available for Windows 8 and also for my Android tablet. I am going to think of some information I can work with and start a blog of my own.
Annie says
Thank you David! Yes, the beauty of Evernote is that uses cloud technology and syncs with just about every single device you can think of! This is so handy for us because I downloaded the app to my iMac computer, have the app on my iPhone and on my husband’s android. All of them are synced automatically. It is wonderful!
Let me know when you start a blog! I’m always here if you have questions 🙂
