How to keep the house clean before family comes over.
I am hosting Christmas this year! This means I will have my mom, grandma, 2 aunts, 2 uncles, a few cousins and my 3 sisters and a brother all here at my house.
It will be so much fun!
Living in a teeny house means I have a lot of cleaning and organizing to do. I can’t just rope off an entire portion of the house, it all has to be neat and tidy. I am here to share some things I am doing this week to prepare for my family’s get-together. Mainly, laundry and dishes. This post will focus on laundry tips. Laundry tips:
- Use shortcuts – Lizzie loves washing clothes. I make it super simple for her buy letting her use those detergent pods. It gives her self-confidence cause she is doing it all by herself and I am happy cause she isn’t doing too much, too little, making a mess, etc. Otherwise, I just use the easy-dispense on my Whirlpool machine. Such a fabulous feature that shoots out the correct amount of detergent!
- Let them have fun! – I will make laundry a game with my kids. I let them take turns turning it on. I also have races to see who can put the clothes in the machine the fastest!
- Start a load of laundry when you first wake up – This is tough. I am so not a morning person. But I have so many clothes to wash that I have to put them in first thing or I get behind.
- Set timers – Clothes that sit in a washing machine start to smell. I’ve learned that the hard way way too many times. My Whirlpool machine has beautiful chimes that go off on both the washer and the dryer. If your washing machine does not have a timer, then set an egg timer so you don’t forget those clothes.
- Put clothes away directly out of the dryer – Ok, this is easier for me to do cause my machines are sitting in my hallway. But if your washer and dryer are in a central location, you can do this too. With my super young kids, I can’t fold and sort in piles – they mess up the piles like a kid jumping in leaves!
- Reward yourself – Who said sticker charts are just for kids? Folding and putting away clothes is the bottlneck for me, so I have a sticker chart. Customize your stickers with a sticker printing company. For every load I complete, I get a sticker. (There are apps for this too). Then, when I get 25 stickers I get a prize! (Sometimes this is Starbucks, or something).

Oh, my little ones always watch when I do the laundry but that’s the maximum of their contribution 😉 They are always amazed how we put in dirty clothes and then somehow have clean shirts, trousers and blouses. MAGIC! 🙂
I love those detergent pods! (Just be careful – awhile ago they had a thing on the news saying that kids thought they were candy.)
C is in charge of putting a pile that I’ve created in the machine. He likes to push start. Then I move them to the dryer and fold them. Each person is responsible for (NICELY) putting their clothes away.
The biggest time saver for me is to have the kids put their clothes in the hamper right side in.
