Follow these super-easy road trip safety tips as you drive around with your family this year! Some of them might surprise you.

The Most Important (And Easiest) Road Trip Safety Tips
Which of these tips are you actually following?
Erie Insurance cares so much about the safety of drivers (including their customers) that they commissioned a national survey to bring attention to safety features available in today’s cars. Turns out, most people aren’t using all that their cars offer!
Thanks to advanced engineering and technology, today’s cars are safer than ever. That might be true, but the technology only works if people actually use it. The survey found some drivers actually disable the features that were made to keep them safe.
I’ll share some of the safety tips I learned – but I HIGHLY suggest you check out the Erie Insurance blog post and see what other safety features in your car you might overlooking!

Tip #1: Use Your Adaptive Cruise Control
If you have a relatively new car, it probably has something called adaptive cruise control. This is where your car will maintain a specific distance on the road between the car in front of you and your vehicle.
This means that if a car pulls out in front of you on the highway while your cruise control is on, your car will automatically slow down.
Erie learned in their survey that 30% of drivers said they disabled adaptive cruise control. Are you one of the 30%?
Keep this on and use it. This will prevent you from traveling too closely to the car in front of you and possibly rear ending them when you aren’t paying attention.
Tip #2: Get To Know How To Use You Car’s Safety Features
My next tip is for you to learn as much as you can about your car and use the features that you might have disabled.
Erie Insurance reminded me that we should give some of the features that we turned off a chance. If they are awkward, try to get used to them. In fact, the more you use them, the more comfortable you will be with them and the safer you’ll be.

Tip#3 Drive Distraction-Free
My final tip is for you to drive distraction-free. Drive hands-free. Don’t text and drive. If you are talking on your hands-free device, avoid conversations that distract you from the road.
This also means no putting on makeup, recording videos, or eating in the car while you drive.
You should be completely aware of all the cars around you at all time. Nothing should surprise you or “appear out of nowhere.”

Our Favorite Car Insurance Company
William and I have used and relied on Erie insurance for our entire marriage. They are extremely helpful and a huge value for all the care and protection they give you.
Want to know more about them?
So far they serve in 12 states (including Washington D.C.). In fact, they are growing more and more every day! They have more than 6 million policies in force for auto, home and business insurance. That’s no small potatoes!
Road Trip Safety: Final Tips
William and I love going on the road together! We have family in both Kansas and West Virginia, which means we put a lot of miles on the road. Thankfully one good thing about road trips is that you can actually Sleep in an RV Anywhere.
Car safety is one of the most important things to us. So, we never forget to bring on spare auto parts like these toyota spare parts and repair tools in case of emergency on the road during the trip.
Please use your car’s safety features and drive distraction-free this year!
I’ll have to check to see if my car has adaptive cruise control (or if my husband has turned it off ?). That’s good to know that it’s a feature!
Excellent tips! I really need to give adaptive cruise control another try. I bet my car has it and I haven’t even used it. Great pics from your fall color tour road trip too!
Thank you so much Carrie!
This is wonderful! I love that Erie Insurance did this.
There are so many safety settings that I’ve turned off just cause I don’t want to learn how to use them. Thank you for the reminder.
Awesome tips that everyone can follow through. It’s best to ensure car safety before travelling.
