Monkey Munch or Puppy Chow?
I call it monkey munch, but you may know this snack as puppy chow. No matter what you call it, this recipe makes a great snack!
Traditionally, puppy chow is made by coating Rice Chex cereal with powdered sugar making it appear white. Monkey munch adds chocolate to the recipe giving it a brown appearance.
Chocolate Monkey Munch
This recipe uses a brownie mix to get that rich chocolate flavor, and it couldn’t be easier. There are only five simple ingredients!
It makes a great filling for treat bags, or you can set the whole bowl out at a party and let people graze. Of course, you can just make it for yourself too. I won’t tell.
Tasty Additions
Get creative by adding something salty to this recipe like pretzel sticks and peanuts to create a sweet and salty snack. You can also make it extra chocolate-y with M&M’s.
How about throwing in some Reese’s Pieces for a chocolate and peanut butter combo? Get creative!

- Mixing Spoon
- Microwave

Monkey Munch Tips
There isn’t a lot to this recipe, but I do have a few tips to make it come together as smooth as possible. The hardest part is waiting for it to cool!
Melting Chocolate
The best way to melt chocolate chips is in the microwave. Go slowly by heating for 20 seconds at first. Then stir and microwave again for 10 seconds. Stir and continue until the chocolate is melted.
Mixing Trick
In order to get the chocolate brownie coating and powdered sugar all over every side of every piece of Rice Chex cereal, grab a Ziploc bag. Place them inside and shake, shake, shake! This method is much easier than stirring with a spoon, and it’s fun too.
How to Store Monkey Munch
Store your monkey munch in an air tight container at room temperature. It will stay fresh for about a week.
