DIY Acorn Snacks Tutorial
When I was trying to think of a snack I could make with my 3 year-old granddaughter E, these DIY acorn snacks stood out. There aren’t very many steps, all the ingredients are yummy, and they look super cute!
Oh and bonus – they go perfectly with I Lost My Tooth! by Mo Willems.
Remember those hilarious books about the cute pigeon? Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Or how about Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale? Both of them were written and illustrated by Mo Willems. And his newest set of characters are the wacky Unlimited Squirrels.
In the first book from his new series, a group of silly squirrels all freak out because one of them lost his tooth! What ensues is a bunch of hilarity as they try to find the missing tooth.
What You Need
To make the DIY Acorn snacks, you just need a handful of supplies!
- Butterscotch or Salted Caramel Chips. You can also use Peanut Butter chips!
- Nilla Wafters Minis
- Chocolate Frosting
- Hershey’s Kisses
- Wax or Parchment Paper
How to Make DIY Acorn Snacks
After you have all your supplies and ingredients, you are ready to make some delicious little acorns. Here’s the step-by-step tutorial.
First, melt the frosting in a small bowl. I put mine in the microwave for about 30 seconds and then stirred it. This will make it perfect for dipping. The frosting becomes the glue for the acorn pieces.
Next, Dip the bottom of the Hershey’s Kiss into the chocolate frosting. Put the bottom of the kiss on the bottom of the Nilla Wafer.
Third, lightly dip the butterscotch chip into the chocolate frosting. Your toddler might have some trouble with this part, you don’t want it covered in frosting, just the bottom.
Then, stick the chip on the top of the Nilla Wafer.
Repeat these steps and make as many acorns as you want to!

5 Things Kids Learn In Unlimited Squirrels
Not only is this book pretty funny and entertaining, but it actually has a lot of educational content to offer too! There are 5 main things kids will learn from Unlimited Squirrels in I Lost My Tooth!
1.) Early Reading
This book is super easy to read and really funny too. It’s perfect for early readers. The best part is, it feels like a thick book. So when your child finishes the book, they will feel pride and accomplishment.
This book encourages early reading for beginning readers, but is also entertaining for older readers too.
2.) Emotions and Feelings
At the bottom of each page – where the page numbers usually belong – are acorns showing emotions. These are “Emote-Acorns.” You can discuss what feeling they are showing and why.
For example, if you see a sad Emote-Acorn, ask why it is sad. What just happened in the story?
This also helps your child engage with the story and learn reading comprehension.
3.) What “Losing a Tooth” means
The Unlimited Squirrels go on a mad hunt looking for the lost tooth! Through their experience, your child will learn why teeth fall out and what it means to lose a tooth.
All of this takes away the fear and uncertainty from the experience of baby teeth falling out.
4.) Facts About Teeth
Towards the end of the book, you learn what teeth are made of. It also has a page of facts about squirrel teeth too! Everything is presented in Mo Willems’ fashion – so you don’t even know you are learning.
5.) A-Corny Jokes
Remember those joke books you checked out from the library? There are a bunch of nutty jokes at the back of the book. Your kids will love telling them to you again….and again…enjoy!
But seriously, laughter is the best medicine. And if reading jokes encourages a kid to read, then bring on even the corniest of jokes!
